Following a year in which California growers shipped 91.5 million boxes worldwide, industry leaders are anticipating another exceptionally robust table grape harvest. Driven by optimal growing conditions, licensed growers are preparing to deliver outstanding volumes of high-quality fruit to both domestic and international markets.
Favorable Weather and the Memorial Day Window
Consistent, warm springtime weather in the Coachella Valley is accelerating crop development. According to industry reports, temperatures reaching the 90s in April are allowing the harvest to start early enough to ensure plenty of grapes are available for the Memorial Day holiday. Tudor Ranch in Mecca anticipates availability as early as May 12, kicking off with varieties such as Karizma and Flame, followed by Sugraone and Valley Pearl. This early start ensures that retailers can meet peak consumer demand before production transitions to the San Joaquin Valley by mid-July.
Maximizing Yields with Premium Genetics
Growers across California, including McFarland-based Fruitful, are reporting “heavy crops” with excellent bunch counts on the vines. A key driver of this success is the industry’s continued transition toward high-performing genetics that meet modern retail standards.
Fruitful’s program, which begins in July, relies on a diverse portfolio of around 10 varieties to maintain a steady pipeline. This includes globally recognized BLOOM FRESH™ genetics such as Sweet Globe™ and Allison™, alongside other industry staples like Ivory, Scarlet Royal, and Autumn King. These advanced varieties offer growers significant agronomic advantages, ensuring consistent yields and the exceptional crunch and flavor that defined the 91.5 million boxes shipped last season.
Meeting Global Retail Demand
The optimism surrounding the California crop highlights the enduring strength of the region’s agricultural sector. “This season, the California table grape industry is positioned to deliver exceptionally delicious and nutritious table grapes throughout the U.S. and around the globe,” stated Kathleen Nave, president of the California Table Grape Commission.
By cultivating climate-resilient varieties and utilizing labels like “Eat Healthy,” authorized California growers are perfectly positioned to meet the stringent quality standards of major supermarkets and deliver sustained value across the global fresh produce supply chain.
