In a global agricultural landscape increasingly defined by climate volatility, BLOOM FRESH™ is positioning itself as a pioneer of resilience and market disruption. Following the strategic acquisition of the Inka’s Berries genetic program, the company is not only entering the high-growth blueberry sector but also redefining how premium fruit varieties are commercialized and cultivated worldwide.
A New Era for Blueberries: The “No-Chill” Breakthrough
The integration of the Inka’s Berries germplasm bank at the end of 2024 represents a significant portfolio expansion for BLOOM FRESH™. This move bridges the company’s leadership in table grapes and cherries with the rapidly expanding “healthy snacking” blueberry category.
A decisive factor in this acquisition was the proven performance of these genetics during the 2023 El Niño phenomenon. While traditional crops suffered from a lack of cold weather, “no-chill” varieties such as Matías, Salvador, Abril Blue+, and Alessia Blue+ maintained high production levels.
“We realized the capacity of these varieties with low-chill requirements during the 2023 El Niño event,” says Josep Estiarte, CEO of BLOOM FRESH™. “We were able to verify that they are truly ‘no-chill’, meaning they require almost no cold hours to thrive.”
Disrupting the Industry with an “Open” Commercial Model
BLOOM FRESH™ intends to challenge the traditional “closed” model of the blueberry industry. Mirroring the successful strategy used for their world-class table grapes, the company is implementing a transparent commercialization model based on strategic licensing.
“We propose a different model that gives selected producers greater freedom and control,” Estiarte explains. “We will license high-quality varieties directly, not only for producers to grow but also for them to sell freely. This level of autonomy is uncommon among ‘top’ varieties in the current market.”
Innovation in Table Grapes: Red Flesh and Disease Resistance
The company continues to push genetic boundaries in the table grape sector with two major R&D focuses: antioxidant-rich “Red Flesh” grapes and natural disease resistance.
- Red Flesh Grapes: After a decade of development, BLOOM FRESH™ has launched varieties with red pulp, containing significantly higher antioxidant levels than traditional white grapes. Currently planted in Spain, these varieties are slated for expansion into Mexico, Chile, and Peru.
- Disease Resistance: Prioritizing the development of varieties with natural resistance reduces the reliance on chemical treatments. Estiarte notes: “We believe there will come a point where varieties that do not require treatments will become the standard, just like the transition from seeded to seedless varieties.”
Future Outlook: Emerging Markets and Varietal Longevity
While Peru remains a global leader in varietal replacement, BLOOM FRESH™ is aggressively targeting emerging markets. The company has identified over ten countries for strategic expansion, including Morocco, Egypt, China, and India.
Regarding the lifecycle of new varieties, the era of 40-year staples like Crimson or Thompson is coming to a close. Estiarte estimates the modern lifespan of successful varieties—such as Sweet Globe™ or Allison™—to be between 15 and 20 years, as advanced breeding allows for the development of superior alternatives at an accelerated pace. By maintaining a constant pipeline of innovation, BLOOM FRESH™ ensures that its licensed growers always have access to the most competitive genetics in the world.
